Matomo
Connect Matomo Cloud or self-hosted Matomo to see how much traffic ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini send your site, which pages they land on, and what they convert into.
Overview
What you get with the Matomo integration
Finseo authenticates with a Matomo auth token and queries the Reporting API, scoped to Matomo's native AI Assistants channel. Matomo is the only analytics tool Finseo supports with a built-in AI acquisition channel, which means visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot are classified by Matomo itself rather than guessed from referrer strings. You get AI traffic per platform, top landing pages, goal conversions, and revenue in the Finseo AI Analytics dashboard, next to your AI visibility data.
Use cases
What you can do with Matomo and Finseo
Real ways Matomo customers use Finseo to track and grow AI search revenue.
- 01
AI traffic per platform
See visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot as separate rows, straight from Matomo's AI Assistants channel. No regex segments to maintain.
- 02
Top AI landing pages
Find out which pages AI engines actually link to. Use the list to prioritize Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) work and to check that cited pages match the content you want AI answers to reference.
- 03
Goal conversions by AI source
Matomo goals such as sign-ups, demo requests, or downloads are broken down by AI platform, so you can compare conversion rates from ChatGPT versus Perplexity or Gemini.
- 04
Revenue attribution
If you track ecommerce in Matomo, Finseo shows revenue from AI-referred visits per platform, alongside the goal data.
- 05
Privacy-first AI insight
Keep the data ownership and GDPR posture that made you choose Matomo. Finseo reads aggregated reports via the API and does not add scripts, cookies, or tracking changes.
Why it matters
Why Matomo customers need AI visibility tracking
Matomo is the leading open-source web analytics platform, used on well over a million websites, and since version 5.5 it ships a native AI Assistants acquisition channel that recognizes referrals from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and other assistants. That makes Matomo the cleanest source of AI traffic data available: the classification happens inside Matomo, not in a third-party pattern list. Finseo connects to that channel and puts AI traffic, landing pages, goals, and revenue next to your AI visibility scores, so you can see whether being mentioned in AI answers actually turns into visits and conversions.

How to connect
How to connect Matomo to Finseo
A few steps to wire up your Matomo account with Finseo. No code required.

Create an auth token in Matomo
In Matomo, go to Administration, then Personal, then Security, then Auth tokens, and create a token. Read access to the site you want to connect is enough.

Click Connect in Finseo
On the Matomo integration card, click Connect and enter your Matomo URL (Cloud or self-hosted) and the auth token.
- 03
Pick the site
Choose the Matomo site you want to track AI traffic for. Each Finseo project tracks one analytics source, so connecting Matomo replaces an existing GA4 or Piwik PRO connection on that project.
- 04
Check your Matomo version
The AI Assistants channel requires Matomo 5.5 or newer. Matomo Cloud is updated automatically; self-hosted instances need to be on 5.5 or later before Finseo can read AI traffic.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about Matomo
Answers to the most common questions about the Matomo integration.
It does not have to guess. Matomo 5.5 and newer ships a native AI Assistants acquisition channel that classifies referrals from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and other assistants. Finseo queries the Reporting API scoped to that channel, so the classification comes from Matomo itself.
Matomo 5.5 or newer. The AI Assistants channel was introduced in that release, and Finseo relies on it. Matomo Cloud customers are upgraded automatically. If you self-host, update to 5.5 or later before connecting, otherwise the AI Analytics dashboard stays empty.
Yes. Finseo supports both Matomo Cloud and self-hosted Matomo. Your instance needs to be reachable over HTTPS from Finseo, run version 5.5 or newer, and expose the Reporting API. Enter the instance URL and an auth token when you click Connect.
In Matomo, go to Administration, then Personal, then Security, then Auth tokens, and create a new token. Finseo only reads reports, so a token tied to a user with view access to the relevant site is sufficient. You can revoke it in the same place at any time.
No. Finseo reads existing reports through the Matomo Reporting API. You do not add scripts, change your tag manager, or touch your consent configuration. The integration is read only and never modifies your Matomo instance, its reports, or its raw data.
No. A Finseo project tracks one analytics source at a time. Connecting Matomo replaces an existing Google Analytics 4 or Piwik PRO connection on that project. If you want both, create a second Finseo project and connect the other analytics source there.
AI traffic per platform (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, and others recognized by Matomo), top landing pages for AI referrals, goal conversions attributed to AI visits, and ecommerce revenue when you track it in Matomo. All of it sits next to your AI visibility data in Finseo.
Finseo reads aggregated report data such as visits, landing pages, goals, and revenue by channel. It does not access raw visitor logs, IP addresses, or personal data. Retrieved metrics are stored encrypted and are only visible to members of your Finseo project.
